Tsendze Mammals!

Those of you that know Kruger well will understand that as you travel from Satara up towards Olifants that the terrain changes from mostly open tree savanna to dense bush savanna and then finally to open shrub – dense bush savanna (Mopane, Red bushwillow and Leadwood) which indicates Elephant and Buffalo country. Mopane leaves are not as palatable as the other savanna species thus the concentration of game are definitely not as high in the Mopane veld as in the southern parts of Kruger.

You are however guaranteed to see Elephant by the hundreds and in the case of Buffalo’s we managed to bump into the Mooiplaas herd around Mopanie/Tsendze area on a daily basis which according to the rangers exceed a 1,000 animals. Other very special mammals that are found in these parts are Tsessebe, Lichenstein’s Hartebeest (The only place in South Africa where this animal is found), Roan and Sable as well as the Side-Striped Jackal.
