News came through last week of not one but two Pectoral Sandpipers that have been “found” at Mkhombo Nature Reserve Dam, as it is a species which I require for my list the decision was made on Saturday night that Dylan (My son) and I would leave really early on Sunday morning to chase them down.
Mkhombo Nature Reserve is situated in Mpumalanga, close to the border with Gauteng, approximately 170 Km north of Johannesburg.
We followed the GPS co-ordinates of where the last pair was seen and scanned the area for at least two hours but alas today was not going to be my day for the Sandpipers. Dylan and I did manage to spot two unexpected lifers though – Yellow Wagtail and Grey Plover! Fantastic ending to the morning.
